Ruano Pascual, Suarez win third Slam Reuters NEW YORK -- Second seeds Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain and Paola Suarez of Argentina captured the U.S. Open women's doubles title, storming to a 6-2, 6-1 rout of Russia's Elena Dementieva and Slovakia's Janette Husarova. It was the winners' second Grand Slam doubles title this year. The French Open champions broke their sixth-seeded opponents four times en route to a 64-minute thrashing. "It's exciting," said Suarez, who has been teamed with Ruano Pascual for almost eight years. "We know each other too well. It's a long time that we've played together, and I think we are a good combination together." It was their third Grand Slam doubles title after the pair successfully defended their French Open title in June. They lost to Venus and Serena Williams in the Wimbledon doubles final. Suarez and Ruano Pascual will bank $350,000 and will be ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in doubles when the new WTA rankings are released Monday. Dementieva and Husarova beat Ruano Pascual and Suarez on the hard courts at Indian Wells in March, but were no match for them Sunday as they failed to even force a break point. It was the first appearance in a Grand Slam doubles final for Dementieva and Husarova, who eliminated third seeds Cara Black and Elena Likhovtseva in the semifinals. ![]() |
