NEW YORK -- Two-time U.S. Open champion Andre Agassi wrapped up Monday's action in the main stadium by beating fellow American Robby Ginepri 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

The sixth-seeded Agassi, who is tied for the ATP Tour lead with four tournament victories this year, has reached at least the quarterfinals at nine of 11 events this season.

Current French Open champion Albert Costa, seeded No. 8, defeated Magnus Norman 6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round of the U.S. Open on Monday.

Michael Chang, who won the French Open in 1989 for his only Grand Slam victory, eliminated Francisco Clavet 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 , 7-6 (3).

No. 25 James Blake survived a scare, eliminating wild card Brian Vahaly 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (5). Blake battled cramps and spent more than three hours on the court before prevailing.

Fourth-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov, a semifinalist here last year, defeated Davide Sanguinetti 6-2, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.

Costa, who went on his honeymoon after winning the French, lost in the first round at Toronto and second round at Cincinnati after returning to the tour. The clay court specialist advanced against Norman, who is still trying to regain his form after hip surgery sidelined him for six months.

Chang struggled for more than three hours against Clavet in their first hard-court meeting in 10 years.

Also, Wayne Ferreira defeated Jan Vacek 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.
