Defending champ is top pick to win
By Pam Shriver

Obviously one of the big questions of the draw is where would Serena Williams play. She drew Justine Henin in the round of 16. Her sister Venus is in the opposite half of the draw. It's probably good for them that they are in opposite halves.

Pam's Picks
Pam Shriver
Shriver
Former WTA Tour pro Pam Shriver is providing ESPN.com with in-depth analysis throughout the U.S. Open. Shriver, a tennis analyst for ESPN, was ranked as high as No. 3 in singles play. She won 21 singles and 112 doubles titles, including 22 Grand Slams.

It's a different flavor of a draw with 32 seeds. Nothing really stands out as a tough first-round matchup like Barbara Schett against Venus Williams at the French Open or Lindsay Davenport against Jelena Dokic at the Australian Open. It gives the players a breather for the first couple of rounds, but it makes a better second week because everyone is spaced out well.

Laura Granville, one of the top college players in the world, drew No. 1 seed Martina Hingis. Ashley Harkleroad, who is a wild card, has a great opportunity against Meilen Tu.

Venus Williams
Player Pam's Analysis
Venus Williams Venus is mentally the toughest player on the tour right now. She has a good early draw. She has to like that, although some players don't care much about their draw, they just go about their business. She really doesn't have anything to worry about until the semis, unless she puts in a clunker.

Lindsay Davenport
Player Pam's Analysis
Lindsay Davenport Davenport always dangerous on the hard court. She's definitely a champ, and she played well winning Los Angeles over Monica Seles.

Jennifer Capriati
Player Pam's Analysis
Jennifer Capriati Capriati seems to be a little tired from her year, but she might have enough left to win her third Grand Slam.

Martina Hingis
Player Pam's Analysis
Martina Hingis She's got to win another major again sometime, but I don't think it's going to be here.

Monica Seles
Player Pam's Analysis
Monica Seles Seles will be the crowd favorite. She is starting to play well enough to win again. She reached back-to-back finals in San Diego and Los Angeles.

Serena Williams
Player Pam's Analysis
Serena Williams If Serena Williams gets hot, look out. With Serena winning the tournament in Toronto and the Open in 1999, she has to be on the not-so-short list of potential winners.

Kim Clijsters
Player Pam's Analysis
Kim Clijsters Clijsters keeps getting better. She has been to one major final this year already -- the French Open.

Justine Henin
Player Pam's Analysis
Justine Henin The toughest draw of anybody. She'd have to go through Serena Williams in the round of 16, Davenport in the quarterfinals and Martina Hingis or Monica Seles in the semis. She's precocious, but that's tough.
