NEW YORK -- Venus Williams could have won five matches in the time she had to wait to play one.

Williams didn't waste time once she finally got on court, after waiting five hours for thunder, lightning and heavy downpours to subside Sunday in the U.S. Open, as she reached the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-2, 53-minute romp past Magui Serna.

	Two rain delays plagued the U.S. Open on Sunday in New York.

The victory extended Williams' winning streak to 23 matches, the longest of the year on the WTA Tour.

Williams, the Wimbledon champion and No. 3 seed, slugged 24 winners to Serna's five. Williams also served four aces to none for Serna, whose 21 aces going into the match were better than all the other women except Serena Williams' 22.

"I've had three late days in a row now," said Venus Williams, who passed the time during the rain delays by watching a 1986 match between Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova. "I was hoping to play doubles today, but now I have to play tomorrow. It's like I can never get away from this place."

Williams next will play No. 8 Nathalie Tauziat, who beat No. 9 Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario for the first time in 12 matches over 11 years, 6-3, 6-2.
