Serena overwhelming favorite over Dokic

By Pam Shriver

LOS ANGELES -- As predicted, Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams advanced to a semifinal meeting. The other semifinal won't be set until Saturday.

Former WTA Tour pro Pam Shriver is providing ESPN.com with in-depth analysis throughout the Championships. Shriver, a tennis analyst for ESPN, was ranked as high as No. 3 in singles play. She won 21 singles and 112 doubles titles, including 22 Grand Slams.

Serena Williams (1), United States, vs. Jelena Dokic (8), Yugoslavia
Nothing in their first-round matches showed a need to change Serena from being the overwhelming favorite. Serena, the perfectionist that all champions are, thought she didn't play well. She still only lost four games against Anna Smashnova.

Dokic doesn't have the serve -- her weakest shot is her second serve -- or the consistency off her ground strokes to compete with Serena. In addition, Dokic wasn't at 100 percent going into her first-round match and some people thought that alternate Alexandra Stevenson might get the call. You can't stay with the Williams sisters unless you're 100 percent, physically and emotionally.
Edge: Serena

Jennifer Capriati (3), United States, vs. Magdalena Maleeva, Bulgaria
This is an interesting match based on Maleeva's past four weeks of play. She just had the biggest tournament of her career in Moscow, taking out Lindsay Davenport, Amelie Mauresmo and Venus Williams. Then she beat seventh-seeded Hantuchova in the first round here.

If Maleeva keeps that up, Capriati is going to have to play her best match of the fall. Capriati hasn't played well lately, but she was impressive in the opening round against Silvia Farina Elia. She seemed to be having fun and won easily in the second set after a tough first set. She really seems to want to end the year on a positive note.

Maleeva is also an interesting personality. She's the youngest of three sisters to reach the top 10 at some point in their career. Before the Williams sisters came along, the Maleevas were the sisters on the tour.
Edge: Capriati
