HOUSTON -- Todd Woodbridge will have to wait until 2004 to try to break the record for most career doubles titles. Woodbridge and partner Jonas Bjorkman lost to twins Bob and Mike Bryan 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9) Tuesday night and were eliminated at the round-robin stage of the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup. Each team blew two match points. Woodbridge, an Australian, remains stuck on 78 doubles titles, tied for the Open era record with retired Dutchman Tom Okker. Woodbridge does hold the mark for most Grand Slam doubles titles, 15, including Wimbledon and the U.S. Open this year. He and Bjorkman held their second match point at 8-7 in the tiebreaker, but Bjorkman double-faulted twice in a row. That gave the Bryans -- who play Davis Cup for the United States and who won the French Open -- match point at 8-9, but Bob Bryan shanked a forehand. Then, at 10-9, the Bryans converted their third match point when Woodbridge's backhand hit the tape and didn't make it over the net. |
