SHANGHAI, China -- No. 5 Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia, the only seed in action Tuesday, advanced to the second round of the $585,000 Shanghai Open. Dokic held a 7-6 (0), 4-4 lead when countrywoman Jelena Jankovic retired due to illness. The 20-year-old Dokic, who was upset in the first round at Bali last week, is seeking her third title of the year. Two other women retired due to leg cramps. Chinese wild card Tian-Tian Sun was leading Italian Tathiana Garbin, 7-5, 2-3 and American Jill Craybas was ahead of Chinese wild card Jie Zheng, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 2-0. German Anca Barna advanced with a 6-0, 6-2 romp over Korean Yoon Jeong Cho, while Spain's Maria Sanchez Lorenzo and Japan's Akiko Morigami also cruised to straight-sets wins. Sanchez Lorenzo beat Australian Nicole Pratt 6-4, 6-3, and Morigami dispatched Slovakian qualifier Martina Sucha 6-2, 6-3. Elena Dementieva of Russia is the top seed and American Chanda Rubin is second. Dementieva crushed Rubin 6-2, 6-1 on Sunday to win the Wismilak International in Bali, Indonesia. Dementieva, Rubin, third-seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan and fourth seed Conchita Martinez of Spain all received byes in the first round. The winner of this hardcourt tournament will collect $93,000.
