TORONTO -- Vera Zvonareva, ranked No. 16 in the world, won on tour for the first time since Wimbledon on Monday when she beat Barbara Schett 6-1, 7-6 (0) in the first round of the Rogers AT&T Cup.
Zvonareva upset Venus Williams in the fourth round of the French Open, the American's earliest loss at a major in two years, and then lost to her in the fourth at Wimbledon on June 30.
The 10th-seeded Russian had withdrawn from her last two WTA Tour events in San Diego and Los Angeles because of a left elbow injury. But the elbow held up for the 18-year-old against Schett, a former top 10 player who made the quarterfinals here last year.
In other matches Monday, No. 9 Elena Dementieva defeated Alicia Molik 6-3, 7-6 (7); No. 11 Silvia Farina Elia beat Katarina Srebotnik 6-4, 7-5; Magui Serna, winner of two titles this year, beat Tina Pisnik 7-5, 6-3; and Saori Obata beat Shinobu Asagoe 7-5, 6-4.
Obata was one of three qualifiers to win their first-round matches, joining Angelique Widjaja and Jill Craybas.
The top eight seeds, headed by new world No. 1 Kim Clijsters, all received byes into the second round. |
