Davenport not bothered by neuroma in victory

Associated Press

CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Lindsay Davenport played pain free in a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Amy Frazier on Tuesday in the second round of the $1 million Acura Classic.

Fourth-seeded Davenport has been playing with neuroma, a nerve condition that has caused great pain in her left foot, since last fall. Davenport said the bothersome ailment did not flare up against Frazier.

"I was so happy with the way my foot felt,'' Davenport said. "(The pain) comes and goes. It's one of those things that you never know.''

Third-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Eleni Daniilidou.

Daniilidou was unable to keep pace with Henin-Hardenne's solid ground strokes in the second-round match that lasted 49 minutes.

Henin-Hardenne hit 19 winners to only five for Daniilidou, who committed 18 unforced errors.

In other second-round matches involving seeded players, No. 9 Jelena Dokic rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Magui Serna, No. 6 Chanda Rubin was a 7-5, 6-0 winner against Tina Pisnik, and Marion Bartoli upset 14th-seeded Meghann Shaughnessy 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5.

Davenport's neuroma is located between the third and fourth toes of her left foot. The condition has limited her practice time and severely impacted her play on the court.

"It's definitely a struggle when it hurts,'' said Davenport, the former world No. 1 and three-time Grand Slam champion.

Davenport was challenged only once by Frazier -- when she held a 5-2 lead in the first set. But right after Frazier broke her serve on four straight points to make it 5-3, Davenport broke back and regained control of the match.

Davenport ran her career record to 9-0 against Frazier, having beaten her in straight sets eight times.

Dokic, ranked 12th in the world, ran into trouble early in her match against Serna.

"I didn't get going,'' Dokic said. "I was just not there. Maybe because it was too early.''

But Dokic turned it around and ran away with the win.

"My confidence has gone low,'' said Dokic, who was ranked as high as No. 4 last September. "I haven't had a good year. It's important to get some matches in and start playing well.''

In first-round matches, Katarina Srebotnik beat Yoon Jeong Cho 6-3, 6-0; Lina Krasnoroutskaya defeated Saori Obata 6-4, 6-3; Nadia Petrova was leading 6-1, 3-0 when Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian retired with a right wrist strain; Lisa Raymond downed Barbara Schett 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, and Francesca Schiavone was a 7-5, 6-1 winner over Janette Husarova.
