Agassi cruises to straight-set victory

Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Andre Agassi had little trouble beating Ivo Heuberger 6-3, 6-1 to reach the third round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic on Tuesday.

Playing for the first time since a fourth-round loss to Mark Philippoussis at Wimbledon, Agassi broke Heuberger four times, including in the first and final games of the opening set.

In between, Heuberger forced the event's five-time champion to grind his way through some rusty play that allowed the 27-year-old from Switzerland to win the first two points of the match's first five games.

"I thought he played some good points early on my serve,'' Agassi said. "He played aggressive to start with, took his chances. I felt like I sort of dug my heels in and found a nice rhythm.''

Agassi's return game helped him take control of the second set when he broke Heuberger twice on his way to winning the final five games of the match.

"In this case today I thought he went through some patches serving real close to the lines. I kept looking at the speed gun when he hit an ace because I wanted to make sure he was beating me with a quality serve,'' Agassi said. "He was getting risky with it. But then he went through these patches where he missed the first serve and that's what gave me my chances.''

Defending champion James Blake had a much tougher time reaching the third round. The No. 6 seed fought off two set points in a first-set tiebreaker before beating Gregory Carraz 7-6 (6), 6-4.

Also advancing to the third round on Tuesday was seventh-seeded Max Mirnyi, who beat Alex Kim 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; 11th-seeded American Mardy Fish beat Scott Draper 6-2, 7-5 and the No. 14 seed Greg Rusedski beat Ivan Miranda 6-2, 6-4. Three breaks were more than enough for the hard-serving Rusedski, who could be headed for a Wimbledon rematch with Andy Roddick on Thursday should the second-seeded Roddick win Wednesday.

Roddick, paired with American Brian Vahaly, made a rare, but successful doubles appearace Tuesday eliminating the top-seeded team of Bob and Mike Bryan 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Ninth-seeded Arnaud Clement was the only seed elminated, falling 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 to German Lars Burgsmuller.

Also advancing was Thomas Enqvist, who beat Australian Jaymon Crabb 6-4, 6-3; local-favorite Paul Goldstein, who beat fellow American Brian Baker 6-2, 6-2; Jeff Morrison beat Gilles Elseneer 6-3, 7-6 (8); Cyril Saulnier beat Wesley Moodie 7-6 (1), 4-6, 7-5 and Julien Benneteau beat Ramon Delgado 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3; Sergio Roitman beat Peter Luczak 6-3, 7-5.
