Novak upends Federer in Swiss Open final

Associated Press

GSTAAD, Switzerland -- Wimbledon champion Roger Federer had his 15-match winning streak halted Sunday, losing 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 to Jiri Novak in the final of the Swiss Open.

Novak won his 10th straight match at Gstaad, and earned his first ATP Tour title since winning the event in 2001.

"I must be one of the happiest men in the world right now,'' said Novak, who missed last year's event because of injury. "I've won the title here twice and won my fifth ATP title. Roger played excellent but I was maybe a little better.''

Novak, who lost his only other final this year to Federer at Dubai in February, evened their record in head-to-head matches at 4-all.

It was a bitter result for Federer, who delighted organizers and home fans by playing in Gstaad following his stunning victory in Wimbledon, where he beat Mark Philippoussis in the final to become the first Swiss man to win a Grand Slam title.

Federer, trying to win his first title on home soil, reached the final at Basel twice previously, losing in 2000 and 2001.

"It's very disappointing and frustrating, even if it was a great week. It's the third final I've lost at home,'' said Federer, who is 53-10 this season. "This was a marathon for me, playing matches every day or every other day for the last several weeks. Luckily, I've got vacation time now.''

Federer charged to a 5-2 lead before Novak swept the next three games to even the score. But the Swiss, despite an increasing number of unforced errors, managed to break again at 6-5 to take the opening set.

Novak quickly broke Federer in the next set to take a 3-1 lead. Federer broke back to tie the score at 3-all, but lost his serve the next game.

Federer began showing signs of fatigue, and Novak capitalized, breaking again at 5-3 to take the set.

Federer continued to struggle with his serve, and Novak took the third set, losing just five points on serve.

Federer, seeking his third straight title, rallied in the fourth, sweeping the first three games and breaking again at 5-1 to send the match into a decisive fifth set.

The pair stayed on serve until 3-2 when Novak made the only break, then held on to seal the title.

"I have to congratulate Roger. It's not easy stringing all those matches together, nor changing from grass to clay,'' Novak said.

Novak improved his overall record this year to 29-17.
