NEWPORT, R.I. -- Fourth-seeded Robby Ginepri advanced to the semifinals of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships for the second straight year Friday, beating Ivan Miranda 7-5, 6-2 in wet, slippery conditions.
Also advancing to Saturday's semifinals were No. 8 Jurgen Melzer, Gregory Carraz and Cyril Saulnier.
Melzer, who said it was some of the worst conditions he has faced, beat Jeff Salzenstein, 7-5, 7-6 (7).
"If I have to be honest, they were poor,'' Melzer said of the slick grass courts. "I'm glad I won it and I'm not injured.''
Carraz, who eliminated top-seeded James Blake in the first round, downed No. 7 Justin Gimelstob, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3), while Saulnier beat Bob Bryan 6-4, 6-3.
Play was suspended by rain for over five hours Friday.
The Hall of Fame Championships is the only grass tournament played in North America. It is held in conjunction with the annual induction ceremonies. Boris Becker heads the 2003 class that will be enshrined Saturday. |
