NEWPORT, R.I. -- Bob Bryan advanced to his first career semifinal Thursday, beating Cyril Saulnier, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Hall of Fame tennis championships.
Bryan, part of the No. 1-ranked doubles team with his twin brother Mike, was one of the four remaining seeds to advance.
"I think it's anybody's ball game,'' he said. "I think I have as good a chance as anyone.''
Fourth-seeded Robby Ginepri, a semifinalist last year, needed just 62 minutes to beat Dennis Van Scheppingen, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the completion of a match suspended by rain Wednesday.
In other matches, seventh-seeded Justin Gimelstob overcame a loss in the first set and beat Zack Fleishman 1-6, 6-3, 6-3; eighth-seeded Jurgen Melzer defeated Julian Knowle 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in another match suspended Wednesday; and Gregory Carraz beat Chris Guccione, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-4.
In the two second-round matches halted Wednesday, Ivan Miranda beat Andrei Stoliarov, 7-6 (3), 6-1, and Jeff Salzenstein defeated Alex Kim, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3. |
