GSTAAD, Switzerland -- Wimbledon champion Roger Federer won his 14th straight match Thursday, beating Jean-Rene Lisnard 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open.
Federer, who reached the quarterfinals for the first time in six appearances in Gstaad, has not lost a match since the first round of the French Open in May.
"I haven't won too many matches here in Gstaad, but I had a lot of confidence from Wimbledon,'' said Federer, who leads the ATP with five titles and 52 wins this season.
Federer will face David Sanchez in the next round.
Sanchez beat defending champion Alex Corretja 6-4, 6-4.
The seventh-seeded Corretja, a three-time champion who won the title last year without dropping a set in the tournament, accepted a wild card into the event after skipping Wimbledon following the birth of his daughter, Aroa.
"There have been a lot of changes in my life lately. I don't know if I was ready to win here,'' Corretja said.
In another match, second-seeded Rainer Schuettler defeated Christophe Rochus 6-3, 7-6 (6). Schuettler will face eighth-seeded Radek Stepanek in the quarterfinals. |
