Pistolesi, then Smashnova, won in Vienna in 2002

Associated Press

VIENNA, Austria -- Defending champion Anna Pistolesi of Israel beat Barbara Schett of Austria 6-1, 6-2 Tuesday to reach the second round of a $170,000 Grand Prix tournament.

Pistolesi won this event under her maiden name of Smashnova in 2002 before marrying former Italian tennis player Claudio Pistolesi.

Schett seemed to weaken in the 95-degree heat, making frequent unforced errors.

Pistolesi will play Croatian qualifier Karolina Sprem, who ousted Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.

Fourth-seeded Silvia Farina Elia of Italy beat Spanish clay-court specialist Gala Leon Garcia 6-4, 7-5.

Germany's Anca Barna ousted Slovakia's Henrietta Nagyova 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 and will next play fifth-seeded Argentine Clarisa Fernandez. Sixth-seeded Paola Suarez of Argentina downed Conchita Martinez Granados of Spain 6-4, 6-3.
