Harkleroad makes quick exit in Vienna

Associated Press

VIENNA, Austria -- Ashley Harkleroad was routed in the first round of a $170,000 Grand Prix tournament Monday, losing 6-0, 6-0 to Clarisa Fernandez of Argentina.

Harkleroad, an American ranked 52nd, was coming off a good showing at the French Open, where she defeated No. 9 Daniela Hantuchova.

Fernandez, seeded fifth, surprised Harkleroad with her serve-and-volley game and thrashing serve. The Argentine will next face Anca Barna or Henrietta Nagyova.

Seventh-seeded Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic downed Evelyn Fauth of Austria 7-5, 6-3 to qualify for the second round. Eighth-seeded Maja Matevzic of Slovenia beat Angelika Roesch of Germany 6-3, 6-1.

Austria's Patricia Wartusch, a semifinalist last year, defeated Italy's Maria Elena Camerin, 6-4, 6-4.

Top-seeded Jelena Dokic of Serbia and Montenegro opens Tuesday against Rita Grande of Italy, who ousted Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-2.
