BERLIN -- Jennifer Capriati beat Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-4, 6-4 Wednesday to advance to third round of the German Open. The fourth-seeded Capriati overcame erratic play and needed just 90 minutes to defeat the 34th-ranked Schiavone. Capriati squandered a 4-1 lead in the second set, but rebounded to sweep the last two games for the win. The seventh-ranked Capriati was pleased with her performance in her first clay-court match of the season. "It was a good workout, a good red clay match. Under the circumstances I think I played well,'' Capriati said. In other action, top-seeded Kim Clijsters beat Emille Loit 6-4, 6-2, Amelie Mauresmo defeated Jelena Kostanic 6-1, 6-4, Jelena Dokic struggled past Marlene Weingartner 7-6 (5), 6-4, and Nathalie Dechy beat Maja Matevzic of Slovenia, 6-4, 6-2. Capriati has reached the semifinals of four straight events since returning from eye surgery, only to lose to a higher ranked player. She lost in three sets to Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport and Justine Henin-Hardenne. Capriati believes she needs more confidence in her play. "I play the first or second set the way I want, then I lay back, feel the pressure, I need to get more aggressive,'' Capriati said. "I notice against players ranked lower than me I have more confidence.''
