INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Lindsay Davenport believes she's close to regaining top form a year after knee surgery.
"I actually would have been OK losing, because that's the best I've played in a number of months,'' Davenport said Friday night after she beat Jennifer Capriati 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to move into the Pacific Life Open final. "I was getting very frustrated at my inability to play at a level that I thought I could play at.'' Davenport, a former No. 1, obviously still needs to work on her consistency. She made 59 unforced errors to Capriati's 28, but drilled 50 winners to Capriati's 23. "I knew that I was making errors, but I felt just getting shots in and having long rallies was not how I was going to win the match,'' Davenport said. "A couple of times I picked the wrong time to go for a big shot, but I think I was real aggressive in moving forward and I had a lot of winners against a very fast opponent.'' Capriati, who was up 4-3 in the third set, took an injury timeout after Davenport went ahead 5-4. When Capriati returned to the court, Davenport finished the match. Asked what her injury was, Capriati said, "Well, I guess it's like a high hamstring strain. I've been feeling it the last couple of days. I was fine the whole match, and just sort of at the end of the match, it started bothering me because I was running around so much. "With it being a little chilly and everything, finally it gave way a little bit.'' The seventh-seeded Davenport, the Indian Wells champion in 1997 and 2000, will face No. 1 Kim Clijsters in Sunday's final. Clijsters defeated Conchita Martinez 6-3, 6-2. Since winning the Sydney title, Clijsters has embarked on a series of near misses. She made the semifinals of the 2003 Australian Open, where Serena Williams beat her in three sets. She also reached the final of Antwerp, where she lost to Venus Williams, and the final of Scottsdale last week, but lost again, this time to Japan's Ai Sugiyama.
