INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Antonella Serra Zanetti of Italy spoiled older sister Adriana's 25th birthday Wednesday with a 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-3 victory in the opening round of the Pacific Life Open.
It was the fourth time the sisters have played as professionals, and each has won twice. The loss left Adriana disconsolate, and she lingered on the court long after the match ended.
The win advanced 22-year-old Antonella into the second round of the $2.1 million event, where she will face No. 2 seed Jennifer Capriati on Thursday.
Antonella was forced to qualify for the main draw even though, at No. 95, she is ranked higher than Adriana, who is No. 122. When the entries were taken, however, Adriana was No. 56 and Antonella No. 96.
In other late matches, Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic beat Dinari Safin of Russia 0-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2); Silvija Talaja of Croatia beat Joannette Kruger of South Africa 6-2, 3-6, 6-2; and Virginia Ruano Pascal of Spain eliminated Marissa Irvin of the United States 6-3, 6-2.
Earlier in the day, French teenager Stephanie Cohan-Aloro upset Austrian Barbara Schett 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. The 19-year-old Cohan-Aloro, who has been hitting tennis balls since she was 3, advanced to a second-round match against 10th-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria.
Cohan-Aloro lost the first three games of the match. But she changed the momentum by putting topspin on her shots.
"She played not as deep," Cohan-Aloro said. "I got into the match, then I was able to play my own game."
In other matches, Vera Zvonareva of Russia opened with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus, and qualifier Samantha Reeves ousted 15-year-old Russian Maria Sharapova 6-3, 1-6, 6-0.
Also winning were Magui Serna of Spain, Daja Bedanova of the Czech Republic, Cara Black of Zimbabwe, Els Callens of Belgium and Meilen Tu.
