Clijsters defeats Black, Granville to advance

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Second-seeded Kim Clijsters of Belgium won two matches and waited out a rain delay Friday to advance to the semifinals of the State Farm Women's Classic.

Also advancing to the semis were Alexandra Stevenson and Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States and Al Sugiyama of Japan.

Clijsters defeated Cara Black of Zimbabwe 6-2, 6-3 in the morning -- a match suspended by rain Thursday night. On Friday afternoon, Clijsters defeated American Laura Granville 6-3, 6-3, in a match that included a rain delay of 2 hours, 22 minutes.

Four of the first five days of the tournament have been plagued by rain.

"The first time I played Wimbledon when I had to play Steffi (Graf), I think it took me like three days to finish off that match, so that was probably a little bit worse,'' said Clijsters, who's ranked third in the world. "I hardly brought any warm clothes. You have to be prepared for nature. You can't change those things.

"You get tired sitting inside waiting.''

Stevenson beat eighth-seeded Nathalie Dechy of France 6-3, 6-4. Sugiyama beat sixth-seeded Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 7-5, 7-5. Shaughnessy beat Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-2, 6-1.

Clijsters is the only player among the top six seeds remaining. Top-seeded Serena Williams withdrew Thursday before her first-round match because of tendinitis in her left knee.
