Defending champ Canas falls to Kucera

Associated Press

MADRAS, India -- Defending champion and top-seeded Guillermo Canas lost to Karol Kucera 6-1, 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the Tata Open on Friday.

Canas rallied from a three-game deficit in the second set, but his comeback ended when he was broken in the 12th game.

Kucera, who avenged a three-set loss to Canas in last year's semifinals, will face fourth-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela, a 6-4, 6-3 quarterfinal winner over German qualifier Tomas Behrend, in the semifinals.

In other quarterfinal matches, sixth-seeded Rainer Schuettler lost 6-2, 7-5 to Jean-Rene Lisnard, and second-seeded Paradorn Srichaphan advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sargis Sargsian.

Canas was slowed by the same wrist injury that had hampered his game last year.

"My old wrist injury seemed to have flared up today,'' Canas said. "It was pretty painful after being OK for the past five weeks.

"My participation in any event before the Australian Open will depend on how the wrist acts.''
