Kournikova's status for singles event: 50-50

Associated Press

MOSCOW -- Anna Kournikova retired from her doubles match at the Kremlin Cup on Wednesday after spraining her left ankle.

Kournikova was sidelined most of last season because of a stress fracture in the same ankle.

Kournikova and American Meghann Shaughnessy were tied with Jelena Dokic and Nadia Petrova after two sets when Kournikova injured her ankle and retired.

There was a 50-percent chance Kournikova would compete in her second-round match against Petrova on Thursday, according to the WTA injury report.

Kournikova, ranked 35th, is looking for her first career singles title in 116 WTA tournaments.

A wild card in the Kremlin Cup, Kournikova beat Marie-Gaiane Mikaelian of Switzerland 6-4, 6-3 in the first round Tuesday.

Kournikova won her 16th doubles title in Shanghai on Sept. 15.
