Dokic receives yet another early exit

Associated Press

MOSCOW -- Amanda Coetzer beat defending champion Jelena Dokic 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-3 on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Kremlin Cup.

After trading breaks in the first set, Coetzer built a 7-1 lead in the tiebreaker.

Dokic, ranked No. 5, moved out to a 3-1 lead in the second, and broke Coetzer to win the set.

After trading breaks early in the third set, Coetzer won three straight points to take a commanding 4-1 lead. Trailing 3-5 and at 30-30 on her serve in the ninth game, Dokic committed her 12th double fault and then hit a backhand into the net, losing the set and match.

"I had lots of chances and I did not take them, I should have won the third set,'' Dokic said. "It's sad to lose so quickly when you defend your title, but I didn't play well.

Dokic was knocked out of a tournament in the second round for the second time in as many weeks.

In a doubles match, Anna Kournikova, who was teamed with American Meghann Shaughnessy, retired in the third set with an ankle injury. Kournikova and Shaughnessy lost to Dokic and Nadia Petrova.

The extent of Kournikova's injury was not immediately known, and it was not clear if the Russian would pull out of her singles match against Petrova on Thursday.

In a first-round men's match, Bohdan Ulihrach won two tiebreakers and defeated Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2).

At 4-4 in the first tiebreaker, Johansson netted a backhand and Ulihrach moved out to a 6-4 lead. Johansson picked up a point before making an unforced error, losing the tiebreaker and the set.

In the second set tiebreaker, Ulihrach charged to a 5-1 lead, capitalizing on Johansson's poor returns, won the set and match on an ace.

"Actually, it was the toughest match I've ever had with Ulihrach. I have never beat him,'' said the sixth-seeded Johansson, playing for the first time since being sidelined by a sore shoulder in July.

"I was hitting the ball all right today, but it's a different feeling playing a match from practice,'' he said.

Top-seeded Marat Safin beat Fernando Meligeni 6-4, 7-6 (4); fifth-seeded Roger Federer advanced to the second round with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Denis Golovanov; and Jarkko Nieminen beat Marcelo Rios 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (4).

In other women's matches, fifth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tatiana Panova; and Elena Dementieva beat Iva Majoli 6-4, 6-1.
