COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil -- Holland's Sjeng Schalken beat Germany's Michael Kohlmann 6-2, 7-6 (0) Tuesday in the first round of the Brazil Open.
The second-seeded Schalken faces Cecil Mamiit of the United States in the next round.
Even though Schalken made the semifinals in the U.S. Open, where he lost to Pete Sampras, he is not overlooking Mamiit.
"Mamiit's style is similar to mine,'' Schalken said. "He's a baseline player. It's going to be difficult.''
In other results, Brazil's Fernando Meligeni beat the United States' Alex Kim, who was overcome by the heat and retired at 4-6, 6-3, 4-1.
Meligeni now faces Argentina's Gaston Etlis, who defeated countryman Nicolas Massu 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Brazil's Andre Sa easily defeated Peru's Ivan Miranda 6-2, 6-2.
On the women's side, Slovenia's Tina Pisnik beat Paola Suarez 6-2, 6-2. South Africa's Amanda Coetzer beat Slovakia's Janette Husarova 6-1, 6-1. |
