COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil -- Fifth-seeded Iva Majoli of Croatia beat Brazil's Carla Tiene 6-2, 6-1 Monday in the first round of the Brazil Open hard-court tournament.
Slovenia's Maja Matevzic beat sixth-seeded Tatiana Panova of Russia 6-4, 1-6, 6-0, and France's Nathalie Dechy advanced with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 victory over American Meghann Shaughnessy.
Spain's Cristina Torrens-Valero also advanced, beating Brazil's Maria Fernanda Alves 6-2, 6-1.
In men's play, Peru's Luis Horna defeated third-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain, 6-1, 6-3, and fifth-seeded Augustin Calleri of Argentina beat Brazil's Alexandre Simoni 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. American Brian Vahaly also advanced, beating Brazil's Ricardo Mello 6-1, 6-4.
