Sampras' drought continues; Hewitt cruises

Associated Press

MASON, Ohio -- Pete Sampras' title drought stretched to 32 tournaments Wednesday with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) loss to Australian Wayne Arthurs in the Cincinnati Masters Series.

"Maybe he wasn't at his peak, but it's always great to get a win over one of the best players ever,'' Arthurs said. "Yes, he's maybe a little bit more vulnerable than he used to be.''

Sampras, winless taking Wimbledon in 2000 for his 13th Grand Slam title, could not overcome Arthurs' strong serve in the second-round match.

"He's got a huge serve, one of the best serves on the tour, and he backs it up with a big second serve,'' Sampras said. "He's dangerous.''

Top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt, the U.S. Open and Wimbledon champion, advanced to the third round when Davide Sanguinetti withdrew because of a right toe injury. Hewitt led 5-0 when Sanguinetti withdrew.

"I still don't know where my game is,'' Hewitt said. "Obviously, it would have been a lot nicer to have won properly, but I'm through to the round of 16 and can't complain. Matches are going to get tougher and tougher from now on.''

Andre Agassi and Michael Chang flashed old form in scoring impressive victories.

Agassi, seeded sixth, needed just 55 minutes to beat Guillermo Coria, a 20-year-old from Argentina, 6-0, 6-2.

"I was really bringing the pace at him,'' Agassi said. "I was hitting the ball well and controlling the points.''

Chang beat Fernando Vicente of Spain, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-0.

Fourth-seeded Tim Henman tumbled out along with Sampras, falling 7-6 (3), 6-2 to Fernando Gonzalez, while 12th-seeded Andy Roddick and 16th-seeded Carlos Moya advanced easily.

Roddick beat Nicolas Kiefer 6-4, 6-3, and Moya edged Sjeng Schalken 6-2, 6-4. In other matches, Tommy Robredo beat Greg Rusedski 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, and Xavier Malisse outlasted Ivan Ljubicic 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (7).
