Another high seed drops early at Cup

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- Frenchman Michael Llodra upset third-seeded countryman Sebastien Grosjean 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (3) Wednesday, leaving the Mercedes-Benz Cup without two of its top three seeds after the second round.

Lleyton Hewitt, who was to be the top seed, withdrew because of a stomach ailment before the tournament began, American qualifier Alex Bogomolov Jr. stunned No. 1 Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-4 Tuesday night, then Grosjean got knocked out.

No. 4 Andy Roddick restored some order with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Brian Vahaly, a 23-year-old from Atlanta who has jumped 285 spots to No. 118 in the ATP Tour rankings since the end of last year.

In other second-round matches, No. 7 Xavier Malisse of Belgium beat Taylor Dent of nearby Huntington Beach 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 and No. 8 Max Mirnyi defeated Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand, 7-6 (3), 6-4.

Roddick fired 13 aces, including a second serve of 135 mph, and broke Vahaly's serve four times.

"The best thing I've ever faced in my entire life,'' Vahaly said of Roddick's rockets. "That's quite a level higher than I'm used to seeing. I've never seen a serve over 125.''

Vahaly, who has won USTA Challenger titles this year in such far flung places as New Zealand, Tallahassee, Fla., and Aptos, Calif., was two points from winning the first set. Roddick came up with a 127-mph ace to even the set at 5-5, broke Vahaly and then served it out 7-5.

"There are no easy matches,'' Roddick said. "He's very good. He doesn't give you any easy points. Luckily, I have a serve that let me take over the match.''

Roddick improved to 14-4 in his career against his fellow Americans, including 8-1 this year.

At times, though, Roddick was frustrated by Vahaly's ability to move him side-to-side and match his slugging ability from the baseline. Roddick tossed his racket three times.

"It's totally overwhelming, but very addicting to be at this level,'' said Vahaly, who lost in the first round at Wimbledon and the second round at Newport, R.I., two weeks ago. "This is the first step in a long career I plan on having.''

Grosjean had never before played Llodra, a semifinalist in Newport. Llodra led 5-2 in the third set before letting the 11th-ranked Grosjean back in the match under a searing sun at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the UCLA campus.

"I knew I had to go to the net to put pressure on him,'' said Llodra, ranked 101st on the ATP Tour. "This is the first time I beat a good friend and it's hard.''

Grosjean was playing his first tournament since the French Open after taking time off to rest a sore right leg muscle.

Defending champion and second-seeded Andre Agassi had the day off and will play American Robby Ginepri on Thursday.

Bogomolov needed 1½ hours to fall asleep after beating the third-ranked Haas for the biggest win of the 19-year-old's fledgling career.

"I woke up and pinched myself to see if it was real, if I'm still in L.A. and I was,'' Bogomolov said Wednesday. "It's a brand new beginning for me, and hopefully, I can still keep going this week or in years to come.''
