Haas heads to Florida to be family

Associated Press

SARASOTA, Fla. -- The parents of Tommy Haas, the No. 3-ranked tennis player in the world, were seriously injured when they crashed their son's motorcycle.

Authorities said Monday that Peter and Brigitte Haas, both 54, were riding their son's Harley-Davidson when they collided with a truck making a left turn around 1 p.m. Saturday.

Both were airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center in nearby St. Petersburg. Peter Haas was being held in intensive care, while his wife was in fair condition, hospital spokeswoman Cassandra Morrell said.

Jay Frank, a spokesman for the Sarasota Police Department, said the couple was apparently visiting their son from Germany. No further details have been released and the accident is under investigation, Frank said. Officials did not say who was driving the motorcycle.

Haas, originally from Hamburg, now lives and trains in Bradenton, 12 miles north of Sarasota.

In a release from Haas' agents at IMG, Haas thanked everyone for the "outpouring of good wishes.''

"Their health problems are very serious, and we thank people for their prayers and thoughts for our family,'' Haas said. "The aim is for them to be able to thank everyone themselves eventually, but now all energies must be focused on their medical care and our family needs privacy.''
