Hingis confirms Wimbledon absence

Associated Press

LONDON -- Martina Hingis, who underwent ankle surgery last month, officially withdrew Thursday from Wimbledon.

The 21-year-old Swiss star, who won Wimbledon in 1997, also missed the French Open following the May 20 operation to repair ligaments in her left ankle.

"We have received official notification that Martina Hingis is withdrawing from Wimbledon due to her left foot injury and subsequent surgery," Wimbledon referee Alan Mills said in a statement.

Wimbledon runs June 24-July 7.

The French Open is the first Grand Slam tournament Hingis has missed since turning professional in 1994. She has won five Grand Slam tournaments in her career.

After the surgery, Hingis' doctor said she would need six to eight weeks of rest.

She also was suffering from severe pain in her feet, left knee and left hip, which forced her to stop playing or practicing.
