ROME -- Venus Williams' status for the French Open is "probable."

Williams, who pulled out of this week's Italian Open after injuring her right wrist, was examined by an orthopedic specialist on Thursday and received a favorable prognosis. The French Open begins May 27.

"(Venus) has been diagnosed with a ligament sprain of the right wrist," WTA trainer Philippa Stewart said in a statement Friday. "She has been advised to continue with physiotherapy treatment and start practice next Monday. Her present status to play Roland Garros is probable."

Williams lost her No. 1 ranking Friday when Jennifer Capriati advanced to the semifinals at the Foro Italico with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Amelie Mauresmo.

"I don't think she's going to miss the French," Serena Williams, Venus' sister, said Thursday.

The world No. 1 injured her wrist while picking up luggage on Sunday but did not have it examined until Tuesday evening, barely an hour-and-a-half before she was due on court.

She pulled out of the tournament only minutes before the start of her match with Anna Kournikova.

Serena also had some words of comfort for rival Martina Hingis. The 21-year-old is undergoing tests after doctors suspected she may have joint damage and will almost certainly miss the French Open.

Williams said she had been unaware that Hingis was injured.

"I hadn't really heard much about it -- I hope she's doing better because she's never really missed a Slam before," Williams said.
