Kournikova pulls out of Hamburg event

Associated Press

HAMBURG, Germany -- Anna Kournikova withdrew from upcoming tournaments in Berlin and Hamburg, saying Thursday that she's struggling with her game after breaking her foot last year.

The 20-year-old Russian has lost five straight WTA Tour matches, including four first-round exits in a row.

The Hamburg event starts Tuesday, and the German Open in Berlin is the following week. Both are clay-court tuneups for the French Open, which begins May 27.

"I'm very sorry for the Berlin fans because I feel very comfortable there, but after the long injury pause I don't believe I can compete in such an important tournament," Kournikova wrote in a letter to German Open organizers.

Kournikova has decided to play an event in Bol, Croatia, instead despite being granted a wild card for the $585,000 German tournament, according to a Reuters report.

Defending champion and world No. 1 Venus Williams will be the main attraction in Hamburg with Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin and Jelena Dokic also in the draw.

Information from Reuters was used in this report.
