KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- Marat Safin, a quarterfinalist at the Nasdaq-100 Open, has been fined $5,000 by the ATP Tour for using abusive language toward a tournament representative.
Safin, known for his short temper on the court, had a minor accident with a Mercedes-Benz provided by the tournament before the event began, then became angry when denied a replacement, officials said.
The Russian will play top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt in the quarterfinals Thursday night.
