Top players advance in Toronto

TORONTO -- Monica Seles, playing her second match in five hours, rallied to beat second-seeded Justine Henin of Belgium 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 Friday to advance to the semifinals of the $1.2 million Rogers AT& T Cup.

In other quarterfinal round matches, top-seeded Jennifer Capriati defeated ninth-seeded Meghann Shaughnessy 7-5, 6-4; fourth-seeded Serena Williams beat Sandrine Testud 6-0, 6-2; and Anke Huber beat American qualifier Jennifer Hopkins 6-4, 6-3.

Seles, Williams and Capriati had to win twice Friday after their third-round matches were washed out Thursday.

Seles, a four-time champion, beat 10th-seeded Jelena Dokic 6-3, 7-6 (3) earlier Friday.

Seles faced a rested Henin, who played her third round match before Thursday's downpour.

In swirling winds and under clouds that threatened rain at the National Tennis Centre, Seles' overpowering serve and forehand returns put the 19-year-old Henin on the defensive.

"I've just played so fantastically here over the years," Seles said "When you're a little bit on the sluggish side and the crowd gets into it, they really pull you through."

Huber was not satisfied with her performance against Hopkins.

"It was for sure not the best I can play," Huber said. "It was just ugly to play out there. It was not great conditions to play tennis. I think I can still do better."

Seles will meet Williams in one semifinal Saturday, and Capriati will face Huber in the other semifinal.

Williams vowed a different outcome against Seles than their quarterfinal match eight days ago in the estyle.com Classic in Los Angeles. Seles fought off six match points to beat Williams.

"If I get match point, I'm going to win," Williams said. "That's just the bottom line. I have no other choice."

Capriati beat Indonesian qualifer Wynne Prakusya 7-6 (2), 6-2, and Williams came from behind for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over 15th-seeded Barbara Schett of Austria in third-round matches.
