MADRID, Spain – Unseeded Maria Martinez upset No. 5 Barbara Schett of Austria and No. 6 Lisa Raymond of the United States defeated compatriot Jennifer Hopkins in the first round of the Spanish Open Tuesday.

Third-seeded Sandrine Testud of France rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory over defending champion Gala Leon Garcia of Spain.

Testud avoided a three-match losing streak after falling in the first round of last week's Italian Open in Rome. She will face wild card Julia Vakulenko of the Ukraine in the second round.

Leon Garcia captured her first career WTA Tour title at this event last year, defeating Colombia's Fabiola Zuluaga in the final.

Top-seeded American Monica Seles and No. 2 Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain were given byes into the second round.

No. 7 Magui Serna of Spain defeated the Ukraine's Elena Tatarkova, 6-3, 6-2; and eighth-seeded Spaniard Angeles Montolio posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Argentina's Mariana Diaz-Oliva.

In other matches, Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain eliminated Sweden's Asa Carlsson, 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-0; Cara Black of Zimbabwe knocked off Colombian qualifier Catalina Castano, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0; and Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia beat Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.

Also, Barbara Rittner of Germany eliminated Canadian Jana Nejedly, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4); Ana Isabel Medina Garrigues of Spain defeated Australian Nicole Pratt, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3; Rita Grande knocked off fellow Italian Valentina Sassi, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2; and Rossana de los Rios of Paraguay moved on with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Spain's Cristina Torrens-Valero.

First prize in this French Open tuneup is $27,000.
