STRASBOURG, France Jelena Dokic, coming off a weekend
victory at the Italian Open, withdrew from the $170,000 Strasbourg
Open on Monday because of a lower back injury.
The WTA did not elaborate on Dokic's injury or say how it will
affect her preparations for the French Open, which begins May 28.
The 18-year-old Yugoslav beat the season's hottest player,
Amelie Mauresmo, in Rome on Sunday for her first WTA Tour title.
The victory further established Dokic's credentials for the French
Open.
On Monday, Australia's Alicia Molik cruised to a 6-3, 6-2
victory over France's Anne-Gaelle Sidot on a windy day at this
clay-court tuneup for Paris.
Also, Bianka Lamade of Germany ousted Patty Schnyder of
Switzerland 3-6, 6-2, 6-3; Meilen Tu of the United States defeated
Emilie Loit of France 6-3, 3-6, 6-3; and Ai Sugiyama of Japan beat
Maria Elena Camerin of Italy 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Top-seeded Amanda Coetzer and third-seeded Mary Pierce begin
play Tuesday.
