HAMBURG, Germany -- Juan Carlos Ferrero, the world's
fourth-ranked player, has a groin injury that might force him to
miss next week's French Open.
"I'm in pain even when I walk," he said Monday. "If Roland
Garros were to start today, I would not play."
Ferrero would be among the favorites for Paris if he recovers
from the injury that flared during the final of the German Open on
Sunday.
"It got really bad in the quarterfinals at Hamburg, but in the
final the injury was very, very painful," he said.
The loss to Spanish compatriot Albert Portas ended Ferrero's
16-match winning streak, the best on the tour this season.
Ferrero said he probably can't play for Spain at the World Team
Cup. The tournament is a clay-court tuneup for the French Open,
which begins May 28.
He said he will decide in two or three days, but he skipped
Spain's opening match Monday against Australia.
Ferrero won the Italian Open two weeks ago and was hoping to
become the first man to win in Rome and Hamburg in the same year
since Manuel Orantes in 1972.
The two events are part of the Masters Series, the nine
tournaments that are second in importance only to the Grand Slams.
