PARIS Hard-serving Australian Mark Philippoussis
withdrew from the upcoming French Open on
Wednesday with a lingering left knee injury.
Philippoussis underwent arthroscopic surgery on the knee last
December and made a triumphant return to the ATP in February,
capturing the Kroger St. Jude in Memphis, Tenn., for his ninth
career title. But he dropped three of his next five matches and
has not played since falling in the third round at the Ericsson
Open in March.
The 24-year-old Philippoussis admitted at the Tennis Masters
Series event in Indian Wells that he returned too soon from the
offseason surgery. He originally injured the knee two years ago
at Wimbledon during a fourth-round match with American Pete
Sampras.
Last year, Philippoussis matched his career-best showing at the
French Open by reaching the fourth round.
Philippoussis will be replaced by Germany's Lars Burgsmuller.
