| | HARARE, Zimbabwe -- Pete Sampras and Todd Martin have withdrawn for health reasons from the United States Davis Cup team that will face Zimbabwe this week.
They will be replaced by Chris Woodruff and Rick Leach, team captain John McEnroe said Monday.
Woodruff, who will make his Davis Cup debut, and Leach, who will
be playing in the Davis Cup for the 10th time, join Australian Open
champion Andre Agassi and Alex O'Brien.
Sampras, winner of 12 Grand Slam tournaments, withdrew from the team because of a hip-flexor injury
sustained during his semifinal loss to Agassi at the Australian
Open. Martin withdrew because of a viral infection.
The U.S.-Zimbabwe match, to be played Friday-Sunday at the
Harare City Sports Center, will be McEnroe's debut as captain of
the American team. It will be the first meeting between the United
States and Zimbabwe and the first time a U.S. Davis Cup team will
play a match in Africa. | |
