Seles loses first opener in major event

PARIS -- Three-time French Open champion Monica Seles lost to Nadia Petrova 6-4, 6-0 Tuesday, marking the first time she has been beaten in the opening round of a Grand Slam.

It was also the first time Seles has failed to reach the quarterfinals in 11 appearances at Roland Garros. Seles lost in the second round at the Australian Open in January.

In other women's action Tuesday, No. 2 Kim Clijsters, No. 3 Venus Williams, No. 6 Lindsay Davenport and No. 7 Jennifer Capriati won in straight sets.

No. 13 Elena Dementieva was upset by Maria Sanchez Lorenzo 6-3, 6-3, and No. 17 Amanda Coetzer lost to Katarina Srebotnik 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

American Corina Morariu, playing her first singles match since being sidelined late last year by a torn rotator cuff, beat Daja Bedanova 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Morariu returned to the WTA Tour last July after a 14-month battle with leukemia.

Clijsters, Davenport and Capriati lost just a combined seven games.

Clijsters hurried into the second round by beating Amy Frazier 6-2, 6-0, and Davenport defeated Wynne Prakusya by the same score. Capriati, the 2001 champion, swept Joannette Kruger 6-2, 6-1.

On another sunsplashed day at Roland Garros, the second-seeded Clijsters, the biggest threat to end the Williams sisters' Grand Slam domination, won in 45 minutes. She whacked 20 winners to five for Frazier and lost just eight points in the second set.

Clijsters has reached six finals this year, the most of any player, and won three titles. She held two match points before losing to Serena Williams in the semifinals at the Australian Open in January.

Williams has beaten sister Venus, who plays later, in the past four Grand Slam finals. Clijsters, the French Open runner-up in 2001, could meet Venus in the semifinals and Serena in the final.

Capriati, the champion in 2001, said she prefers the pressure when she's not defending the title.

"I feel fresher coming into the tournament this year than last year," Capriati said. "I feel like I'm a little bit the underdog again."

No. 13 Elena Dementieva was upset by Maria Sanchez Lorenzo 6-3, 6-3. Seeded first-round women's winners included No. 10 Jelena Dokic, No. 22 Vera Zvonareva and No. 30 Paola Suarez.

Dokic, a 2002 quarterfinalist, beat Angelika Roesch 6-4, 6-4. Zvonareva eliminated Martina Muller 6-1, 6-3. Suarez swept Edina Gallovits 6-1, 6-0.
