PARIS -- Rain has forced French Open organizers to rejig their schedule for a second day at Roland Garros.

Play was halted for more than one-and-a-half hours early in the afternoon as three-time champion Monica Seles was struggling on center court before dismissing Spaniard Angeles Montolio in three sets.

Belgian Kim Clijsters, a losing finalist last year, was also made to fight in a three-set match against Belarus Tatiana Poutchek on Court Suzanne Lenglen as they were twice interrupted by showers.

Because of the delay, 22 first-round matches had to be put back to Wednesday, including the match between third seed Serena Williams and Slovak Martina Sucha.

Former winners Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Mary Pierce also will have to wait for Wednesday to start their tournament.

Play was spread to 17 courts instead of the 15 usually used in the first round and organizers were planning to use all of Roland Garros 18 courts on Wednesday.

Players will be sent to other nearby stadiums for practice.

More rain was forecast for Tuesday evening and dry weather was expected for Wednesday afternoon with more showers over the weekend.
