MELBOURNE, Australia -- No. 2 Lindsay Davenport, who hasn't dropped a set, trounced Russian qualifier Alina Jidkova 6-0, 6-1 in 45 minutes to reach the Australian Open's fourth round on Friday.

	Anna Kournikova came back after losing the first set Friday and is now one victory away from the quarterfinals.

Jidkova received an ovation when she finally won the second set's fifth game.

Davenport next will meet another Russian -- No. 11 Anna Kournikova, who was pushed to the limit by Kvetoslava Hrdlickova of the Czech Republic before pulling out a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.

In a sloppy match that featured 12 service breaks and a combined 83 unforced errors, Kournikova survived and advanced to the fourth round for the second straight year.

Fourth seed Mary Pierce of France, the 1995 champion and 1997 runner-up, dumped Miriam Oremans of the Netherlands 6-2, 6-4 in 67 minutes.

Another American, Jennifer Capriati, continued her inspired comeback as she dispatched wild card Jing-Qian Yi of China 6-4, 6-4 on Friday to reach the fourth round at Melbourne for the first time since consecutive quarterfinal appearances in 1992-93.

Capriati, who battled drug and legal problems in the mid-1990s, next will face someone who went through some personal problems of her own last season in Switzerland's Patty Schnyder.

Schnyder, who knocked off 1999 runner-up Amelie Mauresmo in the second round, struggled past Nadejda Petrova of Russia 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-2. After winning five events in 1998, Schnyder claimed only one title last season as she broke off with her coach, family and boyfriend to take up with a German faith healer.

Another match Friday saw ninth seed Julie Halard-Decugis of France advance to the Australian Open's fourth round for the first time since 1993 by rallying past Elena Dementieva of Russia 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
