Vaccaro steps down to help ailing wife

By Andy Katz

Sonny Vaccaro, arguably the most influential person in high school and college basketball, resigned from his position as director of grassroots basketball at adidas.

But it's not a move that should shake up the college or high school basketball scene.

Why?

Vaccaro owns his three events -- the ABCD Camp in Teaneck, N.J., the Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas and the Roundball Classic. The first two are among the most high-profile summer events on the circuit. Vaccaro said he will still conduct the events and they will go with him if he takes another shoe company deal (Reebok?).

Vaccaro also said he won't change his involvement in summer basketball or with high school players. He plans to remain active and will continue to offer guidance to players who ask him questions.

As for current agreements, Vaccaro said all summer league teams signed three-year deals with adidas prior to this summer and those will still stand.

So why leave the company he's long been associated with?

Vaccaro wanted to step back in order to help his wife, Pam, who has been sick this summer.
