Meola earns 8th shutout of season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Tony Meola extended his Major League Soccer-record shutout streak to 525 minutes as the Kansas City Wizards beat D.C. United 2-0 on Wednesday night.

The sometimes U.S. national team goalkeeper made only two saves in recording his league-leading eighth shutout of the season.

Kerry Zavagnin and Miklos Molnar scored second-half goals to help the Wizards improve to 8-0-2. D.C. United dropped to 2-8-1.

Zavagnin opened the scoring in the 73rd minute off a pass from Preki. Molnar added his sixth goal of the season in the 79th minute, connecting from 7 yards on a pass from Chris Henderson.

The teams combined for six yellow cards and 52 fouls, the third-highest total in MLS history.
