PASADENA, Calif. (AP) -- The Rose Bowl won't be the home of the
Los Angeles Galaxy much longer, but their final season in it has
been a winning one.
The Galaxy extended its Rose Bowl winning streak to eight games
with a 5-2 victory over the Kansas City Wizards Wednesday night to
win the Major League Soccer quarterfinal playoff point series 6-3.
"They took it to us in Kansas City and to come back and to do
the same thing to them sets a tone and builds some confidence going
into the next game,'' said Cobi Jones, who scored twice, as did
Carlos Ruiz.
The Galaxy will move to Carson, Calif., in June.
Los Angeles held a 2-0 halftime lead, allowed a goal two minutes into the second half, then put the game away by scoring twice in a five-minute span.
Los Angeles was a 4-1 loser at Kansas City Saturday, forcing a
third game.
The victory advances the Galaxy to a semifinal series against
the Colorado Rapids, set to begin Saturday at the Rose Bowl. Game
2 is scheduled for Wednesday at Colorado. Game 3, if necessary,
would be played Oct. 12, at a site to be determined. The Rose Bowl
is unavailable due to UCLA football.
Los Angeles opened scoring in the 34th minute as Ruiz rolled a
right-footed shot under a diving Kansas City goalkeeper Tony Meola
off Sasha Victorine's free kick.
Los Angeles increased its lead to 2-0 on Jones' unassisted goal
during stoppage time in the first half.
The Wizards cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 47th minute on Chris
Klein's goal off assists from Eric Quill and Chris Brown.
The Galaxy put the game away by scoring twice in a five-minute
span. Jones scored in the 62nd minute putting in a rebound of
Ruiz's shot which rebounded off the left goal post and Kansas City
defender Nick Garcia was unable to take possession.
Ruiz scored in the 66th minute, faking out Garcia and then
putting a shot diagonally past Meola, inside the left goalpost.
Preki scored on a 72nd-minute free kick for the Wizards, deflecting his shot off a Galaxy player positioned in the wall.
McKinley Tennyson scored during stoppage time for Los Angeles in his MLS debut.
