NAPERVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- Damarcus Beasley, Hristo Stoitchkov,
Josh Wolff and Ante Razov each scored a goal and an assist to lead
the Chicago Fire to a 5-1 victory over the Kansas City Wizards on
Wednesday.
The Fire (9-9-4) moved into a tie with the Columbus Crew for
first place in the Eastern Conference. Kansas City (8-7-8) remains
in last place in the Western Conference.
Preki opened the scoring in the 8th minute. Fire goalkeeper Zach
Thronton made a kick save on Dario Fabbro but couldn't stop Preki's
rebound attempt from 10 yards despite getting a hand on the ball.
Beasley evened the score in the 12th minute. After a passes from
Stoitchkov and Kelly Gray, Beasley danced around Nick Garcia and
Diego Gutierrez to beat goalkeeper Tony Meola from 15 yards.
Wolff gave the Fire the lead in the 15th minute. Gray carried
the ball up the right side and centered a pass to Wolff, who
slipped in the back door for an uncontested score.
Stoitchkov put the Fire up by two in the 44th minute. Wolff sent
a 40-yard pass to Stoitchkov, who chipped the ball over a
challenging Meola and regained control for the empty-goal score.
Wolff left with an injury to his left ankle in the 55th minute.
Beasley gained control of the ball inside the 18-yard box and
set up Dema Kovalenko for a score in the 88th minute.
A visibly upset Meola, who had allowed 11 goals in 12 games and
was unbeaten in his past seven games, earned two yellow cards.
Garcia earned a red card for stopping a goal opportunity by Beasley
in the 90th minute.
Razov scored on the ensuing free kick, sending a low shot past
backup goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi.
