Monday, September 24 Great finishes ESPN.com RPM.ESPN.com takes a look at what went down in the racing world this past weekend.
Biggest disappointment: Bobby Labonte's early departure from Sunday's MBNA Cal Ripken 400. He's been on such a hot streak -- tough to see him out of the running early. Also, that Saturday's CART race -- and practices preceding it -- had to deal with ridiculous drainage problems, marring what otherwise was some great racing. Gutsy move: Gil de Ferran winning a great battle with Kenny Brack down the stretch to take the checkered in England on Saturday. Also, credit to Dale Earnhardt Jr. for his first victory since his infamous win in the Pepsi 400 at Daytona. Boneheaded move: Ricky Rudd or Rusty Wallace? Take your pick. We choose Wallace, with a bonehead nod to Rudd. Let's also be aware of points leader Jeff Gordon trading his share of paint on Sunday. Far from clean. Quote: "As a baseball player, I've been afforded some overwhelming experiences. Today was one of the greatest ever."" -- Cal Ripken, who grand-marshaled Sunday's Cup race.
