Wednesday, March 5 Golfers run laps at Homestead ESPN.com news services MIAMI -- PGA Tour players Fred Funk and Stuart Appleby have played on some tough courses in their time, but they've never seen anything like this. Funk, Appleby and eight other PGA players set to play in this weekend's Ford Championship at Doral spent Tuesday afternoon at the Homestead-Miami Speedway where they took part in the inaugural Ford Driving Adventure.
On hand to assist the golfers and offer some insight were NASCAR Winston Cup regulars Dale Jarrett, Matt Kenseth and Elliott Sadler. Jarrett led a 30-minute instruction session at the Jarrett/Favre Driving School. The golfers admitted it was the first time they had taken driving lessons without golf spikes in an awful long time. After Jarrett's lesson, the golfers ran 10 timed laps behind the wheel. Four-time Tour winner Billy Andrade was the fastest among the golfers. Later, the PGA pros took turns riding in NASCAR-ready vehicles with Jarrett and other Ford team members. "It was pretty neat to see the excitement on the guys' faces," said Jarrett. "I think they were all pretty excited to get behind the wheel." Speed isn't exactly something golfers are accustomed to. "It was a total rush -- the power of the car, the noise in the car -- it was incredible," said Funk. "It gives you an appreciation for what (NASCAR drivers) do." |
