Winston Cup
Last race: Jeff Gordon used the nose of his car to nudge Bobby Labonte out of the way on the first turn of the 487th lap Sunday to win the Virginia 500 in Martinsville on April 13. The victory was the 62nd of Gordon's Winston Cup career, but his first of the season and the first in 16 races, since September in Kansas City.
Last year: Jimmie Johnson took the lead with 14 laps to go in the NAPA Auto Parts 500 and held off Ricky Rudd and Kurt Busch for his first Winston Cup victory. Fast facts: Matt Kenseth owns a 51-point lead over Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the standings entering this weekend. Kenseth has seven top-10 finishes this season and has held the top spot in the standings for five weeks. ... Johnson's win last year came in only his 13th career Winston Cup start. That was the fourth-fastest for a driver in the modern era, behind Kevin Harvick (third), Ron Bouchard (11) and Earnhardt Jr. (12). ... Jeff Gordon has finished among the top five in four of the six races at Fontana, including wins in the inaugural 1997 race and 1999. ... Chevrolets and Fords have each won this race three times. ... Jeremy Mayfield won the 2000 race from the 24th position. ... Defending-champion Tony Stewart said he won't participate in this year's Indianapolis 500. Busch
Last race: David Green passed Johnny Sauter on the backstretch of the final lap to win the Pepsi 300 at Nashville Superspeedway on April 12. Green was fourth with six laps remaining before rallying to win his first Busch race since June 1996 and sixth overall in the series.
Last year: Scott Riggs started last and finished first in the Auto Club 300. Riggs was sent to the rear of the 43-car field after his team was forced to change the engine in his Ford. Fast facts: Winston Cup drivers had won the first seven Busch races of the season before Green's victory. ... Matt Kenseth, who is expected to compete in both the Winston Cup and Busch events this weekend, owns two wins in this race, in 1999 and 2000. He also has two third-place showings here in 1997 and 1998. ... Todd Bodine, who is 78 points ahead of Ron Hornaday for first place in the standings, won the first Busch Series race at California Speedway in 1997. He started 28th, the deepest starting position for any of the race's previous winners. ... Hank Parker Jr. picked up his first Busch win in the 2001 event. ... Chevrolets have won four of the first six Busch races at Fontana. Next race: Hardee's 250, May 2, Richmond, Va.
NHRA
Last race: Tony Pedregon won his third race of the season by narrowly defeating Del Worsham in the Funny Car final of the O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Baytown, Texas, on April 13. Doug Kalitta earned his first Top Fuel victory of the season by beating Cory McClenathan in the final while Kurt Johnson and Angelle Savoie also won their categories. Last year: Funny Car driver Whit Bazemore, who had already lost in the first round three times in 2002, ended his slump by winning the Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol. Larry Dixon won Top Fuel for his fourth win of that year while Warren Johnson took the Pro Stock category. Fast facts: The facility hosted the special Top Fuel-Funny Car eliminator event in 1999 and 2000. ... John Force Jr. has never won a national event at Bristol. He won at the Dragway during the special eliminator event in 1999. ... The dragway's first 300-mph run came in 1997 by Doug Herbert at the Spring Nationals. In the same qualifying round, Shirley Muldowney set the record of 302 mph. ... The 2001 Mac Tools Nationals marked the first time an NHRA national points event was held at Bristol Dragway in more than 3 decades. ... Bristol Dragway is built on the site of the original Bristol Dragway, which opened in 1965 with NHRA sanction. Next event: Southern Nationals, May 4, Atlanta.
