Will Memo Gidley be with Ganassi next year? If not, does he have a chance of landing a good ride, and who will Ganassi's second driver be? Also, what is the situation with Team Green? Will they jump ship this year? Finally, why has Penske not announced yet that he will run in the IRL.

Kevin Anderson
Willoughby, Ohio

Robin Miller: KEVIN: I saw Memo Friday here at the RPI show and he still hasn't gotten a definitive answer from Chip but I believe it's going to be Bruno because I think he's got a year left on his contract and Ganassi would have to pay him anyway. It stinks because Memo did a good job under tough circumstances (getting to the team late and driving the Lola on road courses) and he's good for CART and open wheel racing. Team Green doesn't want to jump ship but KOOL is contemplating it because there are only 10 American races in 2002 and they don't care about foreign venues. But my gut is that KOOL will stay in CART for at least 2002. Penske might be contemplating keeping de Ferran in CART with a new sponsor (supposedly provided by CART) but I understand there may be some kind of a release on Monday (Dec. 3).

With Roger Penske likely moving one of his drivers to the IRL and the possibility that Rick Galles will fold his IRL team, what do think is the likelihood that Roger would pick up Al Jr. to run in the IRL as a 2nd Penske driver? I know you think Jr. is washed up, but the IRL is just ovals and we all you know you don't have to be a spring chicken to run up front.

Shannon Schmidt
Salt Lake City

Robin Miller: SHANNON: It looks logical doesn't it, especially if Gil stays in CART. But I would be very surprised if that happened. Penske says all the right things about Unser these days but Junior doesn't have the commitment that Penske requires -- with sponsors, testing, professionalism, you name it.

I love your commentary, print and live. I used to hate Tony George, but now I am so thankful that he is the steward of the Indy 500, rather than CART. I am actually looking forward to the IRL season! Tony has done a much better job building strategic alliances: NASCAR, FIA, Chevy, Toyota, Eddie Gossage, ABC, ESPN. All CART has is Fed-Ex and a half-hearted CBS. Do you think Toyota will move the Atlantics to the IRL?

Joe Meyer
Twinsburg, Ohio

Robin Miller: JOE: There is no doubt that CART has done the impossible -- they have actually made Tony George look smarter than they are. Don't forget, he still screwed up the Indy 500 and open wheel racing and it may never recover but CART has certainly done its part the past few years to kill the sport we love. Nobody wins at the moment but if everybody can eventually get together under one roof then open wheel will have a chance to get back to where it was in 1995. I think Toyota enjoys the current Atlantic format and Nissan has the IRL feeder series at the moment. Thanks for watching and reading.

We have heard so much about CART's decision to change from turbo engines to normally aspirated power-plants but I was wondering what Reynard and Lola think of this decision? Are they still going to supply chassis to CART in 2003? Were they even consulted in this process? Have you heard of any other chassis manufacturers joining CART? Please tell me that we won't have ugly IRL-looking cars AND ugly IRL-sounding cars replacing the current CHAMP car! Thanks for your insight.

Gene Jisa
Lincoln, Neb.

Robin Miller: GENE: Reynard and Lola both plan to build IRL and CART chassis in 2003 but I have not heard of any new manufacturers at this time.

Do you think Michael Andretti would have fared better in his Formula 1 stint had he been in equipment equal to what Montoya had in his first year at Williams?

Larry Rochelle
Huntington Beach, Calif.

Robin Miller: LARRY: Absolutely. If you read Tim Considine's fine book on the American F1 drivers, you'll see that Michael had some damn good runs under the circumstances (Senna said the car was bad, practice time was reduced, Michael didn't know the tracks like Juan and did almost no testing). Ron Dennis is (idiot) No. 1 in my mind regardless of what year you're talking about so it was pretty much a stacked deck. But don't kid yourself, Andretti in 1993 was as fast and as good as anybody on this planet.

Robin, I like your style. So be totally honest. Did Michael Andretti make a huge mistake by leaving an established ride for a totally new team, in the hopes to somehow win one last championship before he retires? Can he win another championship?

Brian Pawlowski
Monroe, N.C.

Robin Miller: BRIAN: I don't think so. Driving a Honda for Team Green is a good combination and don't forget the reported $8 million salary that Haas refused to guarantee until Mike was 40. He didn't have a typical Andretti season but don't forget he's almost 40 and CART racing has become a young man's sport. Can he win another title? Only if he qualifies better than he did in 2001. But he finished third in the championship and certainly didn't have anything approaching a typical season for him. Thanks for writing.

Who all of CART teams are going to the IRL next season of 2002? Will Rice get the ride for 2002 in IRL? Which driver in the IRL will win the championship next year?

Scott Stevenson
Silver Springs, Fla.

Robin Miller: SCOTT: Mo Nunn (one car with Hollywood) and Roger Penske (two cars with Marlboro, we think) with Indy participation from Ganassi, Rahal and Team Green. I hope Rice gets Rahal's 2nd car in CART (if there is one) but I'd like to see him drive something in 2002 -- even if it's the IRL. Hornish or Lazier.

The economy is really hurting the sprint car world. Many World of Outlaw teams are quitting the circuit to run local at Knoxville or Williams Grove. Do you have a take on what can be done to reduce costs, etc. Of course, Ted Johnson has pretty much said he will do nothing as far as a weight rule goes.

Theron Schilling
Charlotte

Robin Miller: THERON: Not really. I was at the RPI show here the past few days talking with Gary Stanton and we were shaking our heads at how much money it takes to field a midget or sprint car these days and the purse is still chicken feed like it was 25 years ago. I'm amazed so many people can afford to race USAC, WoO, All-Star Sprints, SCRA -- you've got $40,000 engines and $10,000 purses -- it's insane. Kinda like all racing nowadays.

OK, Robin, what do you think? Is Tony George playing with the idea of taking the IRL show to a few road courses? If so, which ones? Do you think that Penske and some other CART teams moving to the IRL could/would bring some pressure for the IRL to go road racing?

John Vecchi
Leechburg, PA

Robin Miller: JOHN: If he's paying attention, he knows that CART's best crowds are on street and road courses but I don't think a lot of those fans would pay to watch Billy Boat and Donnie Beechler try to road race. CART's four disciplines are what sets it aside from every other series in the world and I don't think the IRL is going road racing unless there's some kind of merger down the road with controlling road courses, IRL ovals and both under a unified title.

How long are de Ferran and Castroneves contracted to Penske? I ask this because, if Penske is going to have an IRL team, but de Ferran and Castroneves would rather stay in CART, is it at all possible that Penske could get a driver or two that have been in IRL races in the past, shown some promise, but currently have no ride? I'm thinking of guys like Jimmy Kite, Robby Unser, J.J. Yeley. If nothing else, they're American drivers, and, right or wrong, that seems to be the preference of a lot of fans, and its supposed to be one of the main reasons Tony George started the series. I realize it probably is unrealistic now, but maybe something to consider down the road?

Paul Miller
Joliet, Ill.

Robin Miller: PAUL: They both have one year remaining on their current deals and, rest assured, neither wants to quit running CART and go to an all-oval series -- especially Gil. But Penske isn't going to take any flyers with Marlboro -- he can't afford to bring anybody along in his first year. But I'd love to see Yeley hook with with Team Penske because he's young and very talented and did a nice job in the little IRL time he got with Menard.

Is there any truth to rumors that the Homestead Miami speedway is planning to increase its banking in the turns? I hope so. As a longtime race fan, increasing the banking would eliminate the single file racing that I have seen with NASCAR over the years. IRL and CART races have produced some great races here when the cars were racing side by side in the turns. Thanks for your insights on motorsports!

Pierre Imar
Miami

Robin Miller: PIERRE: I would seriously doubt it. They tore that track up a few years ago to open up the corners and I don't see another face lift on the horizon unless they quit selling NASCAR tickets. That might force another change. Thanks for watching and reading.

Do you have any word on what the announcer lineup for CART broadcasts will be next year? And, will it change between CBS and Speedvision (or the Speed Channel, or NASCAR-vision, or whatever it will be renamed)? This year, I was sorely disappointed by the poor announcing, the missed action, and the lack of insight. (The fact the the "World's Strongest Man Contest" reruns would get primetime coverage, yet CART races would get one rebroadcast at 3 a.m. a week later was a joke.)

Phil Britton
Minneapolis

Robin Miller: PHIL: Nothing definite yet, although I'm told CBS will have its own people and the IRL will have its own crew. Bob Varsha and Derek Daly would be likely candidates for SpeedVision.

NASCAR seems to be the darling as far a race viewership goes. What does the fact that Fox and NBC are claiming to have lost money on their coverage mean to open wheel TV coverage in the future? What does that mean to the sponsors?

Eric Mendez
Port Arthur, Texas

Robin Miller: ERIC: Considering how much both spent on the contract, there is probably no way they can ever make that deal but they're thrilled with the ratings. Open wheel is not in their mind set at the moment, just ABC's and that's only because of the Indy 500. The CART sponsors are concerned about exposure and American venues so stay tuned.

Robin,I was disappointed when the Disney 200 was discontinued in Orlando, it was a great chance to see some exciting racing and vacation at the same time. Do you know why the event was discontinued and does the IRL have any future plans of returning to Orlando?

Scott Lemoine
Nashua, N.H.

Robin Miller: SCOTT: All I know is that Disney wanted to keep the race in January and the IRL teams naturally objected to starting the season to soon and then having a massive gap in the sked before the next race. I don't know of any plans to resume.

What likelihood would there be in Mika running Indy next May -- perhaps in a third Cheever car? For a couple of years Wally Dallenbach Jr.'s name was liked up with Panther racing, do you see him in their second car for next years Indy 500?

Denny Miller
Redondo Beach, Calif.

Robin Miller: BOZ: I can see Alesi or Herbert at Indy but not Hakkinen. Dallenbach is still trying to put together a deal for the Indy 500 but nothing confirmed. Maybe you could sponsor him?

Why haven't we heard more of the Penske IRL saga of late ? What is the latest on this most horrible of truth/rumor ?

Tim Hanni
Discovery Bay, Calif.

Robin Miller: TIM: Not sure because nobody from Penske will talk but maybe it's because CART has found another sponsor for The Captain so Gil de Ferran can stay in CART. The latest is there might be a press release on Dec. 3 but it's all speculation at this point. Penske is definitely taking Marlboro to the IRL, that's all we know for sure.

Am I missing something here? Why does any race have to end under a "yellow?" Both CART and NASCAR, to name just two series, have had some great finishes in recent years cut short by a yellow. Why can't those laps under yellow not count ... so at least the race would end under green. Especially if two or more guys are racing for the lead. Doesn't the NASCAR Trucks not count "yellow laps"? Thanks. Keep up the great reporting.

Larry McClish
Portage, Mich

Robin Miller: LARRY: Give NASCAR credit -- they red flagged a couple of races last year to ensure a green-flag finish and that's exactly what CART and the IRL should do. Do not screw the fans like CART did at Fontana this year. I believe the trucks have it figured out, yes. Thanks for reading and watching.

Now that the No. 12 team has been shut down, does this clear the way for Mobil 1 sponsorship for Penske's CART championship defending team? When will we find out? Keep up the great work! P.S. Where else can we find your great writing these days?

Todd Bryan
Dearborn Heights, Mich.

Robin Miller: TODD: No, I believe Mobil 1 will be an associate sponsor for Rusty and Ryan but there is (according to CART) a sponsorship proposal for Penske to keep defending champ de Ferran in the FedEx series next year. Not sure who it is but I'm trying to find out every day. I write for ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine and thanks for the kind words.

You have often said that CART should dip into its pile of cash to fund one or more teams to improve the on-track product. Last winter, you wanted CART to fund a ride for Buddy Rice or Casey Mears so as to increase the number of American drivers. Now, you say they should do the same to keep Penske on board. I can see how CART might try to line up some sponsorship for a Penske effort, but as a publicly-held corporation, how could CART spend shareholder's money to benefit one team? It seems to me that any shareholder could sue, since CART's business is running the series, not running a race team. And would the other owners on the BoD ever agree to directly support Penske? What they really need to do is to go back to providing some guaranteed appearance money to help the smaller teams, or kick in to the race purses. Seems to me like going public wasn't such a hot idea in retrospect.

Paul Newendorp
Kent, Ohio

Robin Miller: PAUL: Good observations and, going public was the worst thing CART could do (Gerry Forsythe was the only owner who voted against that, by the way). But I think by keeping Penske it's good for the company and that benefits the stockholders -- just like making sure there are enough good competitive cars. And, yes, they need to take some of that sanction money and give it back to the teams -- plus increase the purse.

What's the latest on the Galles team? Is there a chance they can get some of Budweiser's money? What are the chances of Bud getting involved with another team, at least for the Indy 500. Weren't they on Montoya's car in '00? Has a CART team approached McDonalds about sponsorship. The schedule would appear to be a good fit since their a global company? Why'd they get out after sponsoring Kanaan? Thanks Robin. Keep up the good work.

Bob Stiller
Pittsburgh

Robin Miller: BOB: My sources tell me Bud only offered Galles $500,000 and he couldn't keep operating on that alone. I'm sure Bud will show up on somebody's car at Indy. Yes, they were with Ganassi in 2000 but I don't remember them ever helping Kanaan. Thanks.

Robin, why can't Steve Kinser just go to Indy and run for Eddie Cheever and Owen Snyder and bring along Quaker State?

Jim Barrowman
Joliet, Ill.

Robin Miller: JIM: Steve got to run Indy once and, in his words, it was pretty cool but he can't afford to take a month out of WOO and, in all honesty, doesn't really want to.

Does Ilmor figure into the CART engine supply question?

Bill Asher
Leominster, Mass.

Robin Miller: BILL: Ilmor and McLaren Engines in Detroit are thought to be interested in CART but nothing but speculation at this point. Penske will again have Ilmor engines at Indy and in the IRL (as will Kelley Racing). stay tuned.
