For those keeping track at home ...

Robin Miller NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- It's not like you haven't always needed a scorecard to keep track of the driver changes by mid-season in the Indy Racing League. But this week has been particularly newsworthy.

On Monday, Memo Gidley underwent a seat fitting at Hemelgarn Racing because he was replacing 2000 IRL champ Buddy Lazier for Saturday night's race in Nashville. By Tuesday afternoon, Gidley was on his way back home because Lazier was back in the Delta Faucet Dallara/Chevy.

Jacques Lazier, who began driving for A.J. Foyt last month after Airton Dare suffered serious injuries, is going to Nashville but isn't sure he'll be running.

And Alex Barron, the defending champ here, finally got the OK to step in for the injured Felipe Giaffone at Mo Nunn Racing.

First and foremost is Buddy Lazier's situation. The 35-year-old veteran from Vail, Colo., is struggling through his worst season since the IRL formed in 1996. His best start is 15th, his top finish 10th and he's never seriously been competitive with his under-powered Chevy.

But evidently his team felt a change was needed because Gidley, the super sub from Championship Auto Racing Teams, got called into duty.

"I'm not exactly sure what happened but I was in the car and back out in 24 hours," said Gidley on Tuesday afternoon before boarding a plane to California. "I had a seat and I thought I had a ride but that's not what they told me when I got to the shop Tuesday."

Owner Ron Hemelgarn, team manager Lee Kunzman and Lazier could not be reached for comment.

The other Lazier brother was rumored to be out of his seat with Foyt after four races because of a shortage of funds to run the car. Rookie Anthony Foyt IV drives the other entry for the four-time Indy winning legend.

Memo Gidley
Memo Gidley was the last to get word he wouldn't be needed in the IRL this weekend after all.
"To be honest, I'm still planning to go to this upcoming race," Lazier said. "The team still has my seat and helmet so we're going to see if we can make this thing work. I will say we are seeking money to make sure we can continue on but it's very difficult to find money right now.

"I've been spending all my time on the phone trying to raise sponsorship but I haven't had much luck."

Cut loose by John Menard earlier this summer, Jacques had a couple of decent runs with Foyt and also had to park the car at Pikes Peak because it was so ill-handling.

"I've had so much fun running for A.J. and I think we've made some gains," he continued. "I think that's why he's trying so hard to keep going."

Barron, who gave the small-budget Blair Racing its only win here last year, got the green light from Nunn to wheel his G-Force/Toyota.

"Morris had been trying to find funds to run me in a third car and obviously it's a good opportunity because he has a very solid team," said Barron, who replaced Arie Luyendyk at Indy and finished sixth despite some slow pit stops and a flat left rear tire the last eight laps.

"I'm excited about the possibilities because I like that track."

Giaffone, who suffered a broken right leg and fractured pelvis two weeks ago at Kansas City, is already on the mend at a therapy center in Indianapolis.

"I'm hoping I can do the last two or three races," he said Tuesday afternoon. "I don't know, that may be too soon but I'm going to try."

  • In other off-track news, last week's test of the Cosworth IRL engine was impressive as Sam Hornish Jr. ran fast enough to be fourth on the grid at K.C.

It appears that General Motors will sign a deal to have Cosworth try and rescue the Chevy teams, although it's still going to be several weeks before enough engines can be built for Hornish, Sarah Fisher, Robbie Buhl, Buddy Rice, Vitor Meira and Buddy Lazier.
